The Real Goals

Friday, June 11th, 2010: “Unleash Your Inner Badass.” In front of an audience of 200, Jessica talks about her real goal. AND…the response was WILD.

Cosmopolitan Magazine and New York Times

What a week.

I got a FLOOD of emails, comments and love from you guys regarding my break up with Erin and it made all the difference. I’m not much of a religious girl, but I’ve been looking up in to the sky lately praying for good things to come.

And listen to this…..my prayers have been answered.  Yesterday I got direct emails from both the New York Times and Cosmopolitan Magazine asking for me to immediately send them a copy of the book “Badass Business Women: The Manifesto.”  The editor-in-chief of Cosmo wants to see it NOW.  OMG it’s happening.

So…thanks for all the love.  Your energy is fueling our message, and together we are an inspiration.

PS – We are about to hit 1,000 active subscribers.  Thanks for being one of the first.  If we can gather 1,000, we can gather 1,000,000.

PPS – Keep your eye out for my email on Monday.  You have inspired me to make a bold move.

Drama

Two weeks ago I broke up with the woman I had planned to spend my life with.  More than anything I’ve wanted to throw my computer into the ocean and crawl into a little hole to hide.  I’m heartbroken and shocked at how things ended.

But you didn’t sign up for these emails so I could tell you about my drama.  However, I’m guessing that you have drama in your life too right now…either large or small.  Drama is like heroin…it sucks you in and distracts you from what matters most.

It would be easy to get derailed right now. It wouldn’t be the first time. I’m notoriously bad for getting sucked into the emotional rabbit hole for months at a time.  But on April 4th I drew the line in the sand for myself.  I had to end the relationship and keep my eye on the target.  No more drama.

I’ve worked too damn hard in my business to get distracted right now.  In the next 30 days I launch a DVD training program with Michelle Villalobos AND an entirely new company for one of my clients (on top of the other 6 projects I’m working on).  My clients need me too much.  What I’m up to matters too much.  Yes…I’m grieving and healing, but I’m not giving myself permission to be a drama queen.  It takes incredible discipline.

It would be easier to indulge in feeling sorry for myself.  But I refuse. Instead I’m asking myself… “What’s the most healthy and creative way I can heal from this loss? How can I channel the anger and sadness to push my business forward rather than give myself an excuse to drop the ball?”

As a result, I’m doing surprisingly well.  I’m proud of myself.  My projects are on target. The momentum is strong. I’ve rallied many of my friends and business associates around me, and asked them to fill me with love.

So…what drama could you stop indulging in?
How could you channel powerful emotions for breakthrough results in your career?
Who could you ask to rally around you and fill you with love?

I’m keeping my fingers crossed that this email inspired you.  If it did, let me know.  That would put a smile on my face, and God only knows I need as many smiles as I can get.  :)

Jessica Kizorek Pakistan

Today a friend of mine came over and said, “Jessica, you can’t change them. Your job is only to inspire them and teach them. They have to change themselves.”  So, for those of you who are reading these emails, I’m honored to have the opportunity to inspire and teach you.

Today I challenge you to pick ONE person that impacts your business performance and say this to them:  “I can’t change you.  My only job is to inspire and teach you. Thanks for the giving me opportunity to do that.”

Tell me what happens below.

Sell Yourself

Fellow Badass:

Mostly, I hate selling myself.

Truth be told, I have it that that clients should just come out of the woodwork begging for my contribution to their business.  Sound familiar?  It seems like a common theme amongst many women professionals I know…we have amazing things that we offer, but we hate selling.

In fact, the only awkward moment of the entire anniversary party in February was standing up on stage talking about this new training program Michelle and I are developing.  I know how much it’s worth…how many thousands of dollars I would have paid for the road map…yet I felt self-conscious suggesting you to enroll in it.

What’s that about?

It’s not enough to be brilliant.  If you can’t sell your brilliance, you’ll struggle to make the impact you’re capable of.

So if you have great ideas, great services, or great products, you better learn how to sell them.  If I were a badass at sales like my girlfriend Erin I’d use this opportunity to give some good advice.  But I’m not. I just know that I’m urgently ready for a breakthrough in this area.  I’m sick of having it be a chore. I’m devouring sales books, going to seminars, and furiously developing strategies to package myself.  I want to be masterful at having new people get me and what I have to offer.

Do you have any advice?

Your Viral Video (& tonight)

(Note: Tonight we are getting together for casual networking and cocktails at MaiTardi, 6pm-8pm, 163 NE 39th St, Miami 33137)

If you’ve ever produced a video for your business you should read this.
If you’re considering producing a video for your business, you should read this.
If you want to make money as a video blogger, you should read this.

I’ve been producing videos for 12 years.  I’ve written three books about online video marketing.  I have people come to me all the time and say, “Jessica, can you make us a viral video?”  Each time I flinch. The answer is almost always “No.”  Here’s why…

First off, viral is rarely what business owners really need. Yes, I’m talking to you too. There are plenty of video makers that have tons of views but no earnings to show for it.  I, on the other hand, have one video on YouTube with 46 views that has earned me over $60,000 in consulting contracts.  Prospective clients see that I was hired to give the keynote speech called “Why Bother with Social Media” for 150 audience members, and after 5 minutes they are clear I can be trusted to effectively manage their social media campaigns. This video wasn’t designed to go viral.  It was designed to prove my credibility, which I ongoingly leverage to sell my consulting and speaking services.

Secondly, you can’t make a viral video.  You can build virality into a video, and you can prepare a video for viral distribution.  But you can’t make a viral video.  Videos go viral because people share them.  People only share a video when it does ONE thing: Makes them look good to the person with whom they share it.  The act of sharing the video needs to deepen the relationship between the sender and recipient…it needs to make the sender look cool, smart, informed, entertaining, thoughtful, caring, or protective. It has to serve their needs, not your need to sell more stuff.  So you have to make videos that people will want to share.

Last month I released a music video called “We Have a Badass Dream” that’s 3 minutes long.  When people watch it they get goose bumps. They get fired up. They get in touch with their own passion. They get inspired to go out on the skinny branches and take risks.

When they share it, they inspire the recipient. They look like a badass.  They look cool and innovative. They look like they are “in the know.”  They get to “brag” about being one of the founding members of a fun, new, edgy, underground, quickly growing organization that you only hear about through word of mouth. People are starting to share this video because it makes them look good, and opens up an engaging and authentic dialogue between sender and recipient.

Will this video get one million views?  Who knows.  Right now it has 600 views.  I’m keeping my fingers crossed for two reasons: (1) The video inspires people, and it makes me happy to inspire people. (2) I will leverage the views into dollars by presenting people the opportunity to purchase my books, information products, speaking, consulting and video production.  If you produce a video for yourself, you need to have a plan that sounds something like that.

So, should you share my music video?  Yes, but not because I’m asking you to.  You should share the video because your friends will thank you.

PS – A bunch of you are in it!  If you’re not bragging about your cameo appearance and leveraging it to promote yourself, you should be (proverbially) spanked.

From Pakistan

YOU are a teacher.  Not necessarily a school teacher, but a teacher none-the-less.

Everyday you instruct people and influence people, both in business and in life. You either do it consciously or unconsciously.

For the last four days I’ve been filming in the largest refugee camp in Pakistan.  The only good news about 100,000 displaced people forced into extremely close living quarters is that the girls have a much greater chance of receiving a quality education. And I pray these girls stand for themselves and stay in school…they are far too brilliant to spend their lives illiterate and closed off.

The 12 training videos we are producing with the International Rescue Committee are designed for master trainers to teach teachers how to create healthy learning environments.  Because it isn’t just about teaching reading and writing and math.  It’s about having the students feel respected, appreciated, and celebrated for their gifts.

Do you have the people in your life feel respected, appreciated and celebrated for their gifts?  Do you go out of your way to acknowledge your colleagues when they produce impressive work?  Do you go out of your way to thank your clients, from your heart, for choosing you?

You are a teacher.  But you are also a learner. Do you surround yourself with incredible teachers?  Whenever possible I charm brilliant teachers into being my friends, my mentors, my clients, and my vendors.  But I also pay big dollars to be taught by master trainers.  This month I’m headed to San Jose for Brenden Buchard’s “Experts Academy,” which will teach me how to monitize my passion and momentum with Badass Business Women.

Then on March 24-27 I’m doing Tony Robbin’s “Unleash The Power Within” in Ft Lauderdale with a focus on the patterns I’ll need to break to go from making $20,000 a month to $100,000 a month.  (Tony never comes to SoFl so now is your chance…come do this with and Michelle Villalobos! My buddy Eli Wilhide has offered to give a deep DISCOUNT to Badass members…contact him to find out more or schedule a free group training: 858-740-8759 / eli.wilhide@tonyrobbins.com)

…But now back to teaching…
You teach people how much they are appreciated.
You teach people what they are capable of.
You teach people how valuable they are.

What’s on your lesson plan today?  COMMENT BELOW.

Danger Zone

Today I get on a plane headed for a conflict zone the Middle East.  For the next 9 days I’ll be on a video shoot with the International Rescue Committee to produce a series of training videos that will help this organization rebuild healthy classrooms and learning environments in 22 of the most devastated places on planet earth.

Chances are I’ll return unscathed.  However, the slight possibility of being kidnapped or abducted has heightened my desire to do one thing I simply have to do before I die:  Give a TED talk.

So, while I should have been packing this morning, I instead recorded my first ever TED talk (which I spontaneously wrote on my iPhone last night while sitting at TEDxMIA).  It’s raw, rough, my head is cut off and the printer starts running in the middle. It’s not perfect.  Perfection wasn’t the point.  You can watch my 5 minute video below.

It’s doubtful that any of you are headed into a danger zone where your life is at risk this week.  THAT is a shame. Because sometimes that kind of fear and alertness snap you out of the day to day grind and forces you to spend time on what’s IMPORTANT and what will let your light shine out onto the world.

What’s one idea you have that you have to share before you die?  ‘
Will you share it today?

Change your Emails

Fellow Badass:

What does your email signature say about you?

Does it make you look big, important and accomplished?  Does it drive traffic where you want people to go?  Does it help you promote projects or initiatives?  On any given day I’ll send out almost 100 emails.  I use that space very wisely.  It plays a huge factor in defining how people relate to me.  AND it’s REALLY easy to do…both on your computer and your phone.

Here’s what mine looks like.  (NOTE:  I intentionally put a “PS” and link to the Badass music video in my email signature.  I want EVERYONE I send emails to to watch it.  If you haven’t already, click the link in my signature below.  We’re at 277 views right now.  Only 999,714 views left to go.)

PS…Have you seen my new music video? Watch it today:  http://ow.ly/41uk2
